Creating Magic

2015 Valparaiso Popcorn Parade

2015 Valparaiso Popcorn Parade

2015 Meet & Greet

2015 Meet & Greet

You just never know where the magic will lead you.

Most years The Flanagin Fairies have a heartwarming story to tell after appearing at Valparaiso’s Popcorn Festival and this year was no exception.

Here is a little background….

Our sole purpose as the Fairies is to create magical memories for the children and sometimes we find out that we did exactly that.

After the parade the Fairies do a meet and greet for the children at the Festival.  The wonder and excitement you see in the children’s’ eyes make all the preparation worthwhile.  After chatting its customary to give the child a pre-printed photograph of your fairy character, a sticker or sometimes even a little fairy ornament.

Last year Crystal Snowflake (aka my daughter Erica Flanagin George) had a creative idea to give some of the children a very precious, one of a kind, keep it under your pillow “magical moon stone”.   Crystal presents it to the child with a cute little saying about how it has magic and it will make their dreams come true, but only the good dreams of course.  She keeps them in a pouch and the children cannot see them at first and sometimes will even tell the child that “oh wait that stone doesn’t have enough magic let me find you a different one.”

Spoiler alert:  you can buy them by the bag at most craft stores in pretty colors originally designed to put in flower vases.

So here is this year’s story……

The Fairy Gladmother was chatting with a sweet little girl and when it was about time to go on her way, the mother asked if I (The Fairy Gladmother) remembered the “magic moon stones” that we gave away last year at the meet and greet and I said YES, I sure do!   And then she pointed at her daughter Madelyn and…….there is was!

Madelyn’s mom had turned it into a necklace that Madelyn was wearing.

Our hearts just melted. We ARE creating magic!

You just never know where the magic will lead you.

A little piece of the magic

It was a vision in 2008 after attending the Disney Institute.

How can I bring a little piece of the Disney magic to my business?

Fast forward 2013

Hidden History #26 – Fashions by Inez

Fashions By Inez

I remember my mother doing a lot of sewing in my childhood.

She sewed clothes, slip covers, drapes and costumes.

What she is most remembered for is sewing Barbie doll clothes.

Even with her arthritis crippled hands, she was able to sew the tiniest of patterns.

It was only fitting that she we honor her by being the entrepreneur of our dress shop on Main Street.

Thanks mom for passing down some of your sewing skills to me.

Junior Flanagin Fairies and Applebees

Our Local Applebees

Our local Applebees recently shut down to remodel.  When they re-opened the walls were lined with murals of local people and events.

To our amazement, there they were, our Jr Flanagin Fairies from the 2011 Popcorn Parade.  Madison and Reese (aka Ginger Glitterdrop and Scarlet Sunflower)

We are so proud and so happy for the girls.

Kudos to Applebees for highlighting our community, people, and local events.

a. Intense and especially ecstatic or exultant happiness.
b. The expression or manifestation of such feeling.
The following is an email we received from Ginger Glitterdrop a.k.a Madison Cowger…

My dream to be a Flanagin Fairy came true this year at the Popcorn Fest.  I had seen them in the parades before and I always clapped and waved at them.  I can’t believe that they picked me to join them!  I loved dressing up and having my make up done by Crystal Snowflake and Ella Seaswirl.  The very best part was when Fairy Godmother gave me my very own enchanted wand!  Walking in the parade was a blast, I loved seeing all of the people!  It was so fun getting to walk with my friend Scarlet Sunflower!  It was a day I will never forget.  Thank you to the Flanagin Fairies for making my dream come true!

Love,

Ginger Glitterdrop

They're granting you a wish

We are looking for ways to make more dreams come true, if you have any ideas leave a comment.

Random me:  Life gets better every day.

The Tooth Fairy is a “She”

Our Friend Ronald

Caution:   The following post should only be read by people who “believe”.

The Flanagin Fairies..why do we do it?

Why do we spend hours on our day off dressing up as a fictional characters?

Why do we travel an hour to an event knowing it might be rainy and cold?

Why do we take special care to stay in character and not let the children see us without wings and wigs?

Simple, because the of the children.

It all becomes worthwhile when…

…the first child runs up to give you a hug

…when a mother asks us in front of her daughter if we know the tooth fairy?  We tell her we sure do that we had tea with her just yesterday and the mom turns to the daughter and says, “see I told you the tooth fairy was a “she”!

…a parent tells you their daughter keeps your picture next to her bed or our pictures are still hanging on their refrigerator from last year.

..when you meet a little girl named Katie, who has juvenile diabetes and her entire family is there to raise money for a cure.

Sometimes we will have an adult walk up to us and ask, “who we are and why are we here?”

We have never had any child ask us who we are and why we are here!!  You see, a child just BELIEVES.

Have a wonder-filled day,

Donna Flanagin

Random me:  I enjoy watching the real housewives  TV shows.

Giving Back

Taltree 2010

This past Sunday the Flanagin Fairies appeared at Taltree Arboretum and Gardens for their first Banjo Storytelling and Family Fun Day.  Mother Nature decided to show up  first with a fierce rain storm leaving Taltree without power and then she delivered enough humidity to rival Florida in August.

Despite the bad weather, the children had a good time face-painting, coloring, watching balloon creations, beeswax candle making and jumping in the moon jump powered by a generator.

We volunteer our time to bring  joy and wonderment to the children, but the truth is ……

Little Charmers

……..the children give us so much more in return.

(Who are the Fairies and why were they created will be discussed in future blogs)

Have a wonder-filled day,

Donna Flanagin
